This way you can export your EndNote library and import it to Papers with your library organization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Some caveats before we start:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This only works in the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.papersapp.com\/download-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">desktop application<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EndNote does not export ratings. Unfortunately, this means it won&#8217;t be possible to import them along with your library. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In order to transfer the library structure from EndNote (folders &amp; subfolders), you need to:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use ReadCube desktop version 4.37 (or later)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use EndNote version 9.3.3 (or later)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Export your EndNote library in .enl format (not .xml)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Exporting your full EndNote library<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To begin exporting your full Endnote library, open Endnote and click on &#8220;File&#8221; &#8211;&gt; &#8220;Save a Copy&#8221;. &nbsp;This creates a new copy of your entire EndNote database, including any organizational structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.papersapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/endnote-library-export-saveas-3-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32075\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Save the .enl file on your computer and return to Papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Importing your Endnote library database into Papers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To start, go to the top of the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.papersapp.com\/download-center\/\">desktop<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;application and click &#8220;Add&#8221;. In the drop-down, you want to click on the &#8220;Add Files&#8230;&#8221; button:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.papersapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/add-addfiles.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32076\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>On the following screen, you will need to select &#8220;EndNote Library&#8221; in the drop-down menu. Then select the&nbsp;<strong>.<\/strong>enl&nbsp;file you just created to import your entire Endnote Library to Papers.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.papersapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/import-endnote.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32077\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>If you store PDFs within EndNote and you have not changed the default file location (&#8220;My EndNote Library.Data&#8221; Folder&nbsp;in your Documents directory) &#8211; you do not need to select anything in the &#8220;Select data directory&#8221; field. You only need to select a folder if you changed the download location to something else. In that case, simply browse to where you have moved &#8220;My EndNote Library.Data&#8221; and&nbsp;click the PDF folder and we will search all the sub-folders for the PDFs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT NOTE<\/strong>: The folder in which you store your EndNote PDFs&nbsp;<strong>must be saved locally,<\/strong>&nbsp;not on an external drive, in order for us to successfully import those files in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Exporting a subset of your Endnote library<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Caveat<\/strong>: This method will allow you to export a subset of records but will not retain the file structure. &nbsp;If you want to keep your groups, you will need to export each group separately to recreate within Papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To begin exporting select all of the references you want to export. By default, EndNote will only export the reference you have highlighted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.papersapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/endnote-selected-references-highlighted-1024x404.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32078\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then head to File and click &#8220;Export&#8230;&#8221;. This will open up a dialog. Save the file somewhere you will remember and select the type as XML and the Output style as &#8220;EndNote Export&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.papersapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/endnote-export-save-xml.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32079\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once done you can hit &#8220;Save&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Importing a subset of your Endnote library into Papers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To start, go to the top of the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.papersapp.com\/download-center\/\">desktop<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;application and click &#8220;Add&#8221;.
