ABSTRACT. Fourteen adult mongrel dogs were divided into two groups of seven animals, as follows: group I - Bothrops jararaca and group II - Bothrops neuwiedi. Snake venoms from Bothrops jararaca and Bothrops neuwiedi lyophilized and diluted in saline (1 mg/kg BW - SC) were inoculated in the middle third of the lateral face of the thigh of the animals of groups I and II, respectively. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of these Bothrops venoms considering the following: prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APPT), thrombin time (TT), clotting time (CT), fibrinogen, Fibrin(ogen) Degradation Products (FDPs), hemogram and platelet count. All these tests were done before and two, four, 12 and 36 hours after envenomation. Myelogram, liver, kidney and muscular function were also evaluated before and 12 and 36 hours after the venom administration. In order to avoid deaths, specific antivenom was given (IV) 12 hours after venom inoculation. The results showed that venom from these Bothrops snakes caused changes in hemostatic, hematological and biochemical profiles. The results also showed that venom from Bothrops jararaca was more effective (p<0.05) in prolonging the APTT, PT, TT and CT, in increasing the serum creatine kinase levels (CK) and in decreasing the platelet and megakaryocyte count rather than the venom from Bothrops neuwiedi.
