1st International Congress on Envenomations and their Treatments

One hundred years ago Albert Calmette published a paper reporting the detoxification of venoms, the immunization of animals and the antitoxic properties of their sera. He also suggested a treatment for envenomations based mainly on the seratherapy that he had just discovered.

The 1st International Congress on Envenomations and their Treatments was held in Paris at the Pasteur Institute from June 7 to 9 in honor of Calmette's historic discovery.

The Congress offered a unique opportunity for investigators from different countries to discuss the physiopathology of envenomations and the management of envenomed patients. Brazilian investigators played an important role in the meeting by participating in conferences and presenting posters.

The success of the Congress should be, at least in part, attributed to Dr. Cassian Bon and the other members of the organizing and international advisory committee whose efforts were fully recognized by the participants of the event.
