PREFACE

This issue of The Brazilian Journal of Chemical Engineering (BJChE), from pages 221 to 286, includes a sample of selected articles from the Proceedings of the XXVII Brazilian Congress on Particulate Systems, which was held in Campos do Jordão, SP, in October 1999, under the aspices of the Universidade de São Paulo.

The event, also known as ENEMP (the abbreviature of its former name, Meeting on Fluid Flow in Porous Media, in Protuguese) has occurred annually since 1973, and is a forum of scientific discussions of the research on the fundamentals and applied aspects of Particulate Systems. Applied issues related to this theme include a broad spectrum of different fields such as groundwater flow and soil mechanics, metallurgy and mineral processing, agronomy and petroleum engineering, and, of course, different areas of chemical, mechanical and food engineering. The main scope of the congress is the fundamental aspects of particle characterization and transport properties in porous media, and the interpretation of experimental evidence through mathematical modeling. Technical applications usually present in the congress sections include different reaction and separation processes involving particle-fluid interactions, such as fixed and moving beds, spouted beds, fluidized beds, sedimentation, cyclones, crystallization, drying, and adsorption.

The Organizing Committee acknowledges Prof. Milton Mori who kindly made possible to include in the present issue of the BJChE a sample of selected papers from the XXVII ENEMP.

PROF. REINALDO GIUDICI

Chairman of the XXVII ENEMP

On behalf of the Organizing Committee
